Magnificent Maleficent

I did a doodle on a sticky note (and swamped some colors in Photoshop) on the unknowable Maleficent.

I haven't seen the new movie, as no one I know recommends that I watch it after I explain why I love this particular Disney villain.

 Maleficent was, in many ways, more dangerous than any other Disney villain. In most cases, a Disney villain has a very understandable, if vile, motivation; Gaston was Pride/Lust, Pete was Rage, Jafar was Greed, Cruella de Vil was Vanity... The list goes on.
... But then there was Maleficent. She was slighted, so she cursed an entire kingdom.

I mean, wow. That's what happened when she thought she was being avoided. Imagine if she had been invited and something bad had happened. I doubt anyone would have survived. Maleficent played by a very alien set of rules that you that put you in terrible situations. What's worse is that you either played by those rules, that you do not know, or get severely punished for breaking them.

 In a kingdom of magic, she wasn't a witch, or a god, or, really anything knowable. The claim was that she was a fairy, but she dressed like a devil and later she's shown as a dragon. She is an unknown threat with an unknowable agenda, and she is far more powerful than any other individual.
And she does not like you.

It's almost Cthulhulean.

When I heard that there was Maleficent moive coming out, I had dearly hoped that Angelina Jolie had finally, FINALLY taken a part where she played a villain (she would make an AWESOME villain and I was sorely disappointed in movies like Sky Captain in The World Of Tomorrow where she looked the part but was just a random good-guy). I hoped that it would be a re-taleing of Sleeping Beauty that focused more on the terror that is an unknowable power who feels nothing but contempt for humanity.

But from what I heard, it's a movie about a strong woman who essentially gets raped and then goes on revenge binge.

Thanks, but I don't want a sympathetic Maleficent, and I have Kill Bill (which has Kung-Fu in it) so that story's covered. Plus, you know, the Lifetime channel has that sort of story three times a month. That story has been done. A lot.

What hasn't been done is the story of an un-apologetically evil Maleficent, who has no real motives. To me, that's what I'll always think when I think MALEFICENT.
